On December 8th, Douglas College Theater in New Westminster, Canada, will host a significant cultural event— the Korea-Bulgaria Short Film Screening.
Organized by the Honorary Consul of Bulgaria in Vancouver, Mr. Seo Byung-gil (Ron Suh), this event showcases exceptional short films from both nations, fostering cultural understanding through cinematic expression.
This year’s selection includes three films by the promising Bulgarian director Yana Lekarska, and “Heartbeat” by renowned Korean director Lee Chang-dong. Lekarska’s submissions, refined by her education in film direction at Chung-Ang University and New Bulgarian University in Sofia, provide a unique perspective combining Korean and Bulgarian elements.
Among her films, “The Bridge” portrays a woman on the verge of internal collapse despite her perfect job and appearance, and her interaction with a mysterious new figure in her life. “Here and Now” captures a meeting between a man and a woman in Busan through seven scenes and conversations, while “November Will Be May” delicately unfolds a retired editor’s confrontation with his past in Gwangju.
Lekarska’s recent work, “Because I Love Bad Weather,” received accolades at the 28th Sofia International Film Festival and the 42nd Golden Rose Bulgarian Feature Film Festival, where she was awarded for Best Debut Director.
The screening will take place from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM, with free admission.
Doors open at 1:30 PM.
Mr. Suh, representing the approximately 6,500 Bulgarians living in British Columbia, emphasized the deepened significance of the event with the active participation of the Korean community and encouraged continued support and involvement.
He also stated his commitment to furthering the cultural ties between Korea and Bulgaria through various cultural exchange events in the future, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in strengthening international relations.
